PROJECT/ 'Colourstory'

Commissioned by Textile Forum South West, 'Colourstory' was the proceedings catalogue documenting speaker presentations from the second annual TFSW conference. The conference theme 'Colourstory' explored how designers approached working with colour as a medium in textile design. Speakers included Carole Waller, Janet Haigh, Janet Stoyel, Philip O'Reilly, Lauren Shanley and Eddie Sinclair, with a keynote presentation by fashion designer Zandra Rhodes. The graphic solution references the experimental colour sampling process and sketchbook narrative that textile designers use in the development of designs or collections. The completed document was 56 pages, digitally printed and saddle-stitched, distributed to all delegates after the conference.

Project/ 'At the Edge'

Commissioned by Textile Forum South West 'At The Edge : Extending Textile Boundaries ' was the proceedings catalogue documenting speaker presentations from the inaugural  TFSW conference. The conference theme 'At The Edge : Extending Textile Boundaries'  aimed to encourage debate and catalyse engagement and participation in textiles throughout the South West region. Speakers included Erica Steer, Sonja Andrew, Beatrijs Sterk, Shelly Goldsmith, Sarah E. Braddock Clarke, and Polly Leonard. The graphic solution used the deconstructed edges of a range of textiles, intersecting with typography, to create continuity throughout the document. The completed document was 44 pages, digitally printed and saddle-stitched, distributed to all delegates after the conference.

Project/ 'mending the world'

Commissioned by Wells Cathedral, as part of the Cathedral's millennial celebrations, 'Mending the World' was an exhibition of work by Bristol based artists 'Elemental'. The theme of the exhibition was 'a journey from brokenness to wholeness'  with artwork exhibited in the form of paintings, sculpture, sound, textiles, video and interactive art. The exhibition was installed in the Lady Chapel of Wells Cathedral for 4 Months. The visual identity I designed, formed a focal point for the exhibition. The graphic mark, a circle built by intersecting lines, represented the idea that when we come together through faith or belief (although on different paths as individuals) we are made whole. The identity was applied to graphic signage and all print for the exhibition.

project/ 'heavy water'

I was commissioned by Random House to produce a set of three of full colour book jacket roughs for the publication of 'Heavy Water…and other Stories', a collection of short stories by Martin Amis. This included both typography and illustration and a visually sympathetic reworking of the Vintage imprint logotype. The roughs were approved but the project did not proceed to final artwork.

project/ 'turning points'

Commissioned by Granada Television, 'Turning Points' was broadcast as a six part series presented by Martin Bashir. The series explored, through interview and visual reconstruction, how individuals rebuilt their lives personally and spiritually, when affected by significant and traumatic life events. I was commissioned by 421 Productions to art direct and design the introductory graphic identity and title sequence for the series. The solution utilised experimental and distressed handmade typography and mark-making to convey the narrative mood of the program. The title typography was designed to spiral and rotate, fragment and disintegrate, but then progressively to be rebuilt, echoing the central theme of the series. I created and digitally composited the sequential artwork, which was subsequently edited by 421 in post production. The images below represent the development of the typographic identity and its realisation in the sequential storyboards.
