I was invited to exhibit the illustrations 'A View from the Bridge' and 'The Sleep of Reason' in 'Juxtaposition', an exhibition of contemporary collage and video art at the Museum of Club Culture, Hull. Curated by Mark Wigan, the exhibition marked the Centenary and continuing legacy of DADA. The exhibition formed part of a programme of artistic interventions during 2016 and 2017, Hull's year as UK City of Culture.
Evoking the spirit of DADA the exhibition included collage, assemblage, sound and video art from the following artists: Michelle Thompson, Martin O’Neill, Paul Burgess, Austin Von New, Mark Wigan, Louisa Minkin, Gordon Dawson, Priya Sundram, Kerry Baldry, Marcel Craven, Michael Szpakowski and Mark Wigan.
Two illustrations were selected for inclusion in the exhibition 'Peculiar Pleasures. An 'International Exhibition of Art and Illustration' shown at the Milkwood Gallery, Cardiff, in November 2010. Curated by Spike Dennis, invited international artists were asked to respond to a theme inspired by Jorges Luis Borges’ 1957 publication ‘The Book of Imaginary Beings’, exploring through visual practice 'the physical world and those ethereal spaces that stand on the margins of our consciousness between the known and the unknown'. The illustrations shown in the exhibition were 'Making of a Monster' (Part 1 & 2).
The Exhibition Catalogue was published by Spikeworld and edited and designed by Spike Dennis © 2010. Catalogue internal Photographs were courtesy of Spike Dennis and Naomi Calvert © 2010.
The Illustration 'Wrestling with Angels' was selected by the Association of Illustrators for publication in ‘Images 34: The Best of British Illustration 2010’. The illustration was included in the 'Images 34' London show at the London College of Communication, September 2010.
The illustration ‘Sleep of Reason’ from the ‘Half-Light’ series, explores the line between conscious and subconscious thinking, referencing Goya’s etching ‘The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters’. This image was selected for exhibition at the Busan International Design Festival (May 2009) and the Busan International Environmental Design and Cultural Forum (September 2009) in South Korea.
The illustration ‘A Cleaner Slate”, on the theme of personal and social redemption, was selected for exhibition at the Busan International Design Festival and the Busan International Environmental Design and Cultural Forum in 2008.
Commissioned by Wells Cathedral, as part of the Cathedral's millennial celebrations, 'Mending the World' was an exhibition of work by Bristol based artists 'Elemental'. The theme of the exhibition was 'a journey from brokenness to wholeness' with artwork exhibited in the form of paintings, sculpture, sound, textiles, video and interactive art. The exhibition was installed in the Lady Chapel of Wells Cathedral for 4 Months. As well as creating the graphic identity I was also commissioned to produced two A0 illustrations that were shown within the exhibition.
